  • Preface

THE writer of these verses is aware, that when works are offered in a printed form to the public, the authors must lay their account with receiving the wreath, or enduring the rod, from the hand of Criticism: and although the sanguine partiality of a parent for its offspring scarcely affords her any expectation of being honoured with the former, she indulges a hope that the circumstances under which they have come forth will exempt her from the latter, and procure her an amnesty for the many defects which she is free to confess may be found in them.

Several of the pieces were written before she had yet reached her fourteenth year; and the rest under the pressure of a variety of domestic calamities, and the appropriate feelings of a child, a wife, and a mother; for a father injured[Page iv] and oppressed by the unfeeling hand of Power, a husband neglected by those on whom he had hereditary claims of protection, and a beloved child untimely snatched away: most of them, she owns, are founded on circumstances merely personal, and can therefore be but little understood by any but the parties concerned. — Why then (it may be asked) offer them to the public? — To this question she will give an answer, which has, at least, truth to recommend it: — Inclined by nature, and constrained by sentiments of gratitude, to yield to the wishes of her friends, she has published them solely at their desire, and has chosen rather to run the hazard of Criticism, with all its terrors, than refuse to her friends that compliance to which their kindness and good offices so well entitle them.
