In AFFLICTION.

I.
1 ETERNAL Beam of Light Divine,
2 Fountain of unexhausted Love,
3 In whom the FATHER's Glories shine,
4 Thro' Earth beneath, and Heav'n above!
II.
5 JESU! the weary Wand'rer's Rest;
6 Give me thy easy Yoke to bear,
7 With stedfast Patience arm my Breast,
8 With spotless Love and lowly Fear.
III.
9 Thankful I take the Cup from Thee,
10 Prepar'd and mingled by thy Skill:
11 Tho' bitter to the Taste it be,
12 Pow'rful the wounded Soul to heal.
IV.
13 Be Thou, O Rock of Ages, nigh:
14 So shall each murm'ring Thought be gone,
15 And Grief, and Fear, and Care shall fly,
16 As Clouds before the Mid-day Sun.
[Page 145]
V.
17 Speak to my warring Passions, "Peace;"
18 Say to my trembling Heart, "Be still:
19 Thy Pow'r my Strength and Fortress is,
20 For all Things serve Thy Sov'reign Will.
VI.
21 O Death, where is thy Sting? Where now
22 Thy boasted Victory, O Grave?
23 Who shall contend with GOD: Or Who
24 Can hurt whom GOD delights to save?
