SONNET [12] XII. Written on the Sea Shore. — October, 1784.
1 ON some rude fragment of the rocky shore,
2 Where on the fractur'd cliff, the billows break,
3 Musing, my solitary seat I take,
4 And listen to the deep and solemn roar.
5 O'er the dark waves the winds tempestuous howl;
6 The screaming sea bird quits the troubled sea:
7 But the wild gloomy scene has charms for me,
8 And suits the mournful temper of my soul. [*]
